Tasmanian authorities have warned that crowds are "loving Neil to death" and might lead to the euthanasia of the 1,000kg seal if the crowd keeps crowding the animal near the shore.
Local reports say Neil's rising popularity brings destructive behaviour, including tipping kayaks and attacking jet skis, after returning to land and attracting hundreds of onlookers. Officials have pleaded with the public to give him space.
