Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has pulled a death warrant for William Lee Thompson, 74, who was found guilty of murder in Miami-Dade County. It is the first time DeSantis has cancelled an execution. A second execution was still set to go ahead Tuesday.
The decision came days after a failed execution attempt involving Christa Pike raised fresh scrutiny over Florida's lethal injection process. The governor provided no statement for cancelling the order for Thompson specifically.
